Following his well-received 100 Essential Modern Poems (2005), Joseph Parisi has compiled, with Kathleen Welton, a companionable new collection devoted to outstanding women writing in English over the last 150 years. Beginning with Emily Dickinson, the anthology combines masterworks by a wide range of fascinating authors—several once famous then neglected but well worth revisiting—along with new classics by today’s finest talents. Rita Dove, Kay Ryan, Mary Oliver, and Marge Piercy join Marianne Moore, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, and dozens more from around the English-speaking world, addressing timeless topics of love, family, friendship, war, nature, self-determination, and life in the modern world. Mr. Parisi, former longtime editor of Poetry magazine, will explain how the poems were chosen, set them in cultural contexts, and reveal little-known details about the poets’ personal lives.
